To me, it’s a political statement. It goes against everything we do.

But in Washington’s own State Capitol, which has been called the city’s most racist and anti-Semitic building, there’s little debate as to how it should operate.

I think in Washington, that is what we’re all trying to do, said Sen. Mike Lee in an interview last month. It’s going to be a very busy period coming up for the Senate to decide. I think it’s a very important issue.

Many in Washington are wary of what they see as racism as part of a larger political agenda to destroy African-American lives, but Lee’s comments indicate there will be no war on black people, especially by black-on-white violence. The only other possible outcome, he said, will be racial division within our city.

We’ve got to try to be good neighbor to one another, because there is a lot of work to do here on and off the property line, he said.

Lee, a Republican, believes that black residents don’t have a right to say anything negative about other people’s lives. He has worked to build a community that welcomes other minorities into its communities.

If we are going to take that away from African-Americans, I’m going to do it by myself, he said. I’ve got more friends in the community than in the past when there was an issue.

But when asked how she’d deal with a racially charged protest to take place on June 1, Lee said it wasn’t important because other protesters are coming to her building, so she was simply following her conscience.

If I am going to sit down and talk about something negative to somebody who didn’t get involved, then my conscience is going to lead me to confront that person, she said.

The protest began Saturday morning, and the organizers said they intend to turn the building into an event center for the homeless until the group gets to camp. There will be food, water, blankets, towels, an emergency vehicle and paint the walls of the building for the day.

On Sunday, the group plans to set up a community event outside from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., and then open a day-long camp in the first of four or five areas for the day to encourage community activity.

The first day’s event is planned on June 10 from 5 a.m.
