The Department of Energy has ordered a government-funded 60m renovation of the former building that was badly damaged in the storm and tsunami that struck Fukushima prefecture, Japanese news website Dengeki reported.

The 14m renovation was needed after two years of neglect.

It has included a replacement for the building, which also had a second front window for a small pool that had been washed away.

Dengeki said there were several concrete failures.

When Dengeki first started to dig on our own a year and a half later the building had some problems, a spokesman said in reply.

The building was built in the 1940s, at the site where reactors were built and where the main reactors for the Fukushima Daiichi project were based.

Its original owner, Toshiba Inc, donated it to the government a year ago, but government officials said it needed to be replaced after the collapse of the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The project was to have been built during the 1980s but there were no records of bids being turned up for the project.

Work began on a replacement in 2008, but with some significant work still to be done, and more to be done, the new site is in significant disrepair and dysfunction, the Dengeki source said.

‘Extremely dangerous environment’

The Dengeki statement came as the government’s Nuclear Regulation Authority announced a new assessment of its disaster assessment, in which they are investigating how the Fukushima Daiichi plant collapsed and was breached by its reactors in 2011.

Japan’s nuclear watchdog said it did not accept the conclusion that the accident occurred under highly dangerous circumstances.

But the Tokyo Metropolitan Water Institute said there were serious risks to the health of residents at the complex.

It was thought by some that the tsunami damaged part of the reactor and a generator near the site.

One person who worked there was killed when the building collapsed
