It’s hard to imagine a city that has only a single ISP offering free DSL services – if you really want to make a real difference for an underserved community, there’s probably a way to do just that. And it’s not just that a few cities out there have better, faster Internet access. Many of them even have some sort of municipal broadband provider.

The Washington Post’s Dan Bardi found out that one of four American cities Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland were among the 14 cities with no broadband plans.

Chicago didn’t see a lot of coverage until early last year and didn’t offer free Wi-Fi, but it did offer its own wireless network through its municipally owned internet service provider, Metro. (Bardi pointed out that the city doesn’t offer a broadband service anymore that will be available later.) Detroit and Chicago were the second few cities without broadband options. They got a big boost in broadband this year, when Metro took off in August with plans to expand to 18 cities statewide in an effort to increase broadband service in Chicago and other metro areas. It’s worth pointing out that both these cities included municipal broadband options as a component, as part of their package of infrastructure enhancements to help the public get access to high-speed internet in many places.
