For the longest time, my colleagues and I have been arguing with the question of Who gets caught by the law or by the magistrate’s office On the first day in March of this year, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments from two of the nation’s worst criminal cases involving corruption. The case involved a woman from Oregon who was accused of paying 1 million in payments to a disgraced high school basketball star she had married on the promise of a relationship in exchange. Her alleged affair ended when it led to a second sexual encounter and the accused, a former teacher accused of being a pedophile, was sentenced to three years of probation. He was placed on probation for 10 years. The next three years were spent on the same probation.

As it unfolded over those years, I wondered if the high school player would have to pay 1 million of the settlement to get her into compliance with their wishes if they were likely to get into debt because they were engaged.

Well, my research shows that what happens, most of the time, is that people on probation tend to do things based upon the expectations of their probation officers. If you are caught by a law enforcement officer, if you get into debt, you don’t actually face criminal charges. But that’s certainly the case for me. The law doesn’t punish those who are charged with a specific crime for simply trying to avoid being arrested. They are accused of doing something for the sake of money or that, they are accused of paying a debt, or not paying back.
