LONDON (Reuters) - The United States has struck a two-month peace deal with Saudi Arabia with the aim of creating another diplomatic rift and deepening a diplomatic crisis and the United States’ support for the kingdom, a close aide to President Donald Trump said on Saturday, as the Saudis and the United Arab Emirates sought to mend some of the growing rifts, which have left Riyadh grappling with what’s happening to its reputation and ties for foreign investment.

The United States will hold its first joint business dinner with Saudi Arabia again next week, where both countries are due to meet in Dubai, according to a State Department official speaking on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. ambassador to the two nations told Reuters on Sunday that the United States was proud of the Saudi-led coalition which has been waging a series of bombing raids on Yemen and Saudi Arabia, but that any agreement will be negotiated with the Gulf states, Saudi Arabia’s main political ally in the Sunni Arab world, which are trying to isolate themselves from Washington.

In a telephone interview with Reuters, a Trump adviser said it was too soon to know which Saudi interests were at odds with U.S. interests.

There is nothing yet for us to know about this deal, Trump’s spokesman David F. Donohue said.

The Saudis have been critical of U.S. efforts to help them rebuild their government with a key ally and have sought to portray the Saudis as a regional power.

In recent days, they have tried to distance themselves from Trump, blaming him for failing to meet his pledge to withdraw from the deal in December.

The United States is also sending naval aircraft and helicopters to Saudi Arabia from the Arabian port of Suez, as well as new equipment and aid for the country, according to a senior official with direct knowledge of the decision-making process as well as on Saudi-Arab relations in Washington.

Trump is expected to make a final announcement this week on the pact with Saudi leader King Salman, the two countries’ official ambassadors said.
