I’ve seen many things through my life and I think there are many opportunities, as much as I want to do one of them.

I think most of the people I work with are doing a great job, a better job than what everybody in the profession is doing, for what they’re trying to achieve. And then after that, you’re looking for more opportunities. Which brings me to my second point, what has changed What has changed is being a better person and seeing that we’ve come a long way.

For the most part it has been tough for Mr. Sohn to see the future. The family who had lived on that same roof from his late parents’ house in Queens for the past four generations, he says, have struggled. They were laid off, and they have now left the family’s old home on their properties, along with belongings from old houses, furniture, other assets that were not there during the early years, so that they could find permanent home with dignity.

In recent years, Mr. Sohn has moved to an old Manhattan apartment, where his mother lives at the time. She and his father have not moved in since the recession, and his younger daughter, a six-year-old girl, lives in another building at the same time. We’ve been living with it for so long, he says. It’s been hard. We haven’t been able to afford rent. We’ve been living in separate homes, with no kids, no cars, no TV. That’s not what I can afford to live with.

The Sohns’ old home in Brooklyn in Brooklyn had only a couple of beds and no living room, making it nearly impossible for them to stay in the neighborhood. Even when he moved from Queens, Mr. Sohn says, after college, his brother started to notice that New York had become one of the toughest neighborhoods in America. That changed when Mr. Sohn moved to the West End as a child, where a large new library was built an undertaking that had made him a much more desirable bachelor. I thought, ‘Wow, New York is amazing.’ I think people were going to start to think about me and think about others, too, he says today. But I didn’t have my life on any level.
