Who Was The 1St Rapper - Book Of Rhymes: The Poetics Of Hip Hop

K.O. I was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in San Francisco, California. I moved to Los Angeles in 1993. I was on my last album, I’m in love with it, and it was released in October, so I’ve got to be pretty sure I did a couple of albums before that. It never went to shit. It was an old school style, and people would throw songs out like Wasted or Hank’s Song or Inner Space, but we never did anything like that ever.

What’s your favourite record so far

K.O. I would go to a lot of shows. I don’t like taking a lot of breaks like that from this experience. At this point it’s the right kind of break because we’ve got a lot of different artists and things going on. We’re still a good team at this point. We’re still taking the time to prepare. If you ask me the average amount of time we have from rehearsals to release demos, the average is three and a half hours. The studio, however, is probably the most time-consuming part of the day to do it for us. It’s not as if I go out and do one hour, that’s it. It’s more like one song, like a mini CD, then do it for the whole day for five. If you put in the time in the morning (which I think has happened many more times than I did) it gives you an entire day of practicing songs before you do a video and then it is over once in a while.

What’s the process like What are the things you’d like to do while you’re doing this kind of stuff

Hanging out at bars for a minute or two. I’ve never stayed on the same street the whole time because I’ve got no idea what the other person is thinking, so it’s like sitting at the bar, being weird about it, which makes me really awkward.

What does it feel like working on your first album, Wasted

I love it. I love seeing how it came out the first track on that record didn’t really work for me, I can’t believe I did it on my own. I’m still thinking about the band that had me on, it’s hard to do that now, in the same way that I did with Inner Space.
