I started listening to rap in the early 90s. I was listening to jazz in middle school, because I thought I was getting into jazz music and really enjoying different genres of jazz–and there was a lot of black culture at that time in America, as far as jazz, where there was no such thing as segregated rap. It was the same thing in the ’80s and ’90s, where there was the black rap scene going up and people being like, Are you black like in my life It was really cool from the beginning. The first time I read The Lord of the Rings, Do you like music like that I was like, No Not that way you’re not listening.

What were the influences (both rap and black culture) and who was your inspiration for it

I think the influences I think of black culture were Soulfly’s ’70s and ’80s records and my mom’s jazz days. In general, it was not the black culture I was looking for. In addition to it, I also think there aren’t too many young rappers out there now. It was a place where I was born and raised, and that’s where my influences really come from. Like, I was born into a small black family, and I was kind of raised by them for 20 years.

Did your father, who was born in Baltimore, ever go on to write

I think my dad used to sing when he was growing up, and it was a pretty good way of raising children. It was a really good way of getting the little kids to be educated. I remember my dad playing on the saxophone when I was growing up–because I had good vocal skills, so I would sing like, my dad could really pick me up in terms of just how vocal I was, and he would put some really good music into my ears.

So you’re all just young white kids now

I always felt like it was very easy in my head as being raised that way. I can look up some history, but it’s different for us. When I was little, it was pretty hard. It was hard to be raised white. I remember one time I went in a bus for work (in the back end), and I was just taking in a picture– I had a really nice car. I took my mom and dad in. So when I got out
