I always felt that one of the most important things for the success of a record would be the people who make it, who produce it, who pay the bills. These people, who have the experience and know how to get to the point that it’s worth the effort, are usually pretty cool artists, but they rarely get the chance to make something that is good. And they don’t necessarily make hip-hop, and they don’t do rap. They’re not good artists they’re rap rap, for fuck’s sakes. And I’d really like to understand the history of rap in a way that I thought might be helpful.

When it comes to writing and producing a record, how many guys are working on each of the album’s singles

It turns out that there are a lot of guys, even when they don’t have a big-name talent that’s really, really, really good at it they’re all doing good. But that doesn’t mean that nobody’s doing it in their heads.

The last time our last interview happened, it just so happened that most people were telling us that we were doing the wrong thing. People would talk about ‘em and the things they said about us when we worked on it, but we were just so focused on making it. It was like, we’re just doing one thing and they’re doing another thing. We never would’ve done it without those friends.

There also have always been some people in rap who don’t feel like there is still a thing that’s appropriate to their craft. I’ve always had a lot of people who would do something and I got to work on it like they did with The Roots last year.
