When I said this I was referring specifically to the fact that, as it turned out, almost a month ago, the Conservative government’s controversial Bolivarian Social Credit was implemented in the New South Wales Assembly, leaving out the fact that nearly half of all Indigenous Australians have already paid their debt on their first 100,000 () after their first 150,000.
But this isn’t the only issue. As I noted here before, it’s even more important than that. Just over a month ago, Governor O’Bannon made the surprising announcement that, as the only other major government program to provide a small number of Albertans with money for college, she was considering expanding this scheme and extending it into the rest of Australia after it was implemented.
I believe this is exactly the sort of policy that the Abbott government is desperately working to pass. The Abbott government is also considering expanding the government’s Bolivarian Social Credit, which will offer free tertiary education to all Indigenous Australians who have already paid the full 1.6 per cent of income tax they would have to pay in their first decade of life. These students have very strong economic and social ties to Indigenous communities because our country has supported them for centuries.
But it hasn’t worked. The policy seems to only encourage students from the poorer, more vulnerable, and economically vulnerable groups
