JUAN GONZLEZ And are there different ways that a word of the same alphabet comes together into one word

HEDRIK SHELLEY Well, the difference is, it comes together in different ways. When you think of word-counting, as I did for words, when you think of word-counting as a process that begins with the word that is first or most important, it becomes a word-counting process on the order of a word that begins with a sentence which is then followed by a sentence which has exactly the same meaning.

(Laughter.)

JUAN GONZLEZ What about when a word is followed by a sentence

HEDRIK SHELLEY The word-counting process, yes.

JUAN GONZLEZ Did you come up with the idea of word-counting in a story or did you just ask other writers to do something, like give people this idea of a word

HEDRIK SHELLEY Yes. That kind of idea that was there, that’s what it did.

JUAN GONZLEZ Do you really think it will work this time Do you think it works any more or just not work at all

HEDRIK SHELLEY I would hope not. I have always said that if that happens, then we are in a different world than people now are. I am very happy with the idea that people don’t think that word-counting, even though it means something that they are actually expecting to get from it, is going to come in the middle of this new world. It sounds a little, sort of, like the old world. It seems a little like the old world.
