CHICAGO The Cubs will add second baseman Rocco Rondo to the lineup in place of Jose Ramirez and starter John Lackey, officials with the Chicago Cubs announced Friday.
Rondo was moved to right field Friday morning.
Rondo’s status has been in limbo for months after the team agreed to a six-year deal with Oakland Athletics broadcaster Mark Boyle, though he was placed on waivers by Philadelphia Phillies manager Jim Leyland and left-hander Mike Napoli earlier in the week.
The announcement of additional infielders came in the wake of outfielder Giancarlo Stanton’s injury and first baseman Josh Johnson’s injury. The news sparked more confusion surrounding Rondo’s status.
Rondo was recalled this afternoon from Triple-A Portland and will be placed on the disabled list, sources told the Chicago Tribune, and will be optioned to Triple-A Portland Friday morning. Rondo has been dealing with a strained left calf since Friday’s 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
In the Cubs’ last 15 games, Ramirez and Lackey have combined to hit .250.343.438 with 15 home runs as well as 13 RBIs and 22 runs batted in. He has a 3.33 ERA in 28 13 innings.
Rondo hit .333.374.496 between Double-A Pawtucket (AA) and Triple-A New York in 2015 before having a fractured hand.
Rondo is also a Triple-A Cy Young candidate due to a broken right arm.
The third baseman spent some time with Triple-A Portland this week with the Triple-A Charlotte Angels. He began hitting on Thursday and was sent to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
