U.S. Aid to Iraq
U.S. support of Iraq is critical to ensuring that it will be able to return more than 50,000 U.S. soldiers to their respective countries of origin and protect them from harm and persecution under international circumstances.
U.S. troops from overseas make up about two-thirds of all U.S. military personnel. With about 35,000 active duty U.S. soldiers, the Iraqi Armed Forces maintain over 1.8 million U.S. posts, making it the largest combat force on Earth at about 200,000 members.
A study by RAND says, Forced entry into Iraq can dramatically increase the risk for death and injury from insurgents, terrorist attacks, and other violent events. As the number of U.S. military personnel increased from about 250,000 in 1990 to more than 400,000 today, Iraq’s situation is expected to become even more perilous, and with it, instability and war. With the current U.S. support of non-volunteer Iraqis who are now serving in the Iraqi armed forceseven as Iraq now holds hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops as its soldiers continue to fight against terrorismcontinuing this challenge to Iraq will require continued military force and a major international political change.
US foreign aid to Iraq is not limited to helping to provide security for a part of the country that is now the de facto capital of Iraq, which is now in ISIS control over the province of Qaraqosh, or Tajau. U.S. troops serving in the Iraqi security forces are also providing humanitarian aid to other U.S. forces stationed in Iraq, and the military’s involvement in fighting the extremist group is in part an effort to protect those troops from U.S. troop casualties in Iraq.
