In a bizarre twist of irony, Microsoft will be turning on its video game hardware.

Microsoft announced to its retail business last week that it would switch the consoles to USB 2.0 (and the Xbox One will also support its own 2.0) to protect video gamers from piracy problems and a misuse of Xbox Network, a major part of the Xbox Marketplace that Microsoft describes as a way to help prevent pirates from buying and using games.

The announcement came just as the second-quarter results came out, in part as Microsoft’s video game business took off at an impressive pace and the launch of its Xbox One was showing signs of life. It was worth noting that many in the retail industry still believe that Microsoft’s decision to switch away from USB 2.0 was more a result of selling a cheaper gaming machine instead of a hardware product. But there’s little doubt that Microsoft will end up selling as many consoles as it can sell.

While the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles are both running Microsoft’s own software, it might not be the console industry’s only one with potential to suffer the same fate. In fact, as Microsoft’s software is making a big comeback as it has come up with new software titles in the past couple of years it could prove as lucrative as ever. It isn’t the case that Xbox One owners will need to keep their Xbox accounts open to protect themselves and protect their data from pirates and piracy.

The biggest question for video game retailers and consumers with more than 1 billion in Xbox sales is whether they will be able to withstand the onslaught of the piracy issue. As a result, the video game industry won’t continue to support the development of new hardware and software. Instead, Microsoft will be using other, smaller companies to promote content on its own e-stores.

At Sony, video game distributor and publisher Epic Games will be giving away a Xbox One on its website for 49.95, while Nintendo will be giving away a Playstation 4 on its website for 39.99. Microsoft has also offered a free Xbox One bundle to PlayStation Plus members for two years.
